Warrior one, warrior two. Dog upside down. Hero pose. Elisabeth Hensel, who has been teaching yoga for four years, knows them all.

These uniquely named poses make up yoga, which is growing in popularity in the United States, according to health officials.

Although it has been practiced in Eastern cultures for thousands of years, it was not until the 20th century that yoga became popular in the West. In the 1930s, for example, many Westerners began to study yoga as part of a growing public interest in health and vegetarianism, according to a Discovery Channel study.

In the 1960s, when western pop culture icons such as Mia Farrow and members of the Beatles showed interest in the practice, its popularity with the general public took a turn on the rise – and continues to grow. .

Not only does yoga help with flexibility, it has benefits for focus and even weight loss. Its practice can range from holding a pose for several minutes to practicing relaxed breathing or moving quickly and smoothly from one pose to another while being in sync with your breathing, also known as vinyasa.

Hensel, who currently teaches at the Yoga Center of Lodi and Boneyard Crossfit, recently answered a series of questions about his experience.

I love yoga because it really makes me feel good – mind, body and soul. I feel longer, thinner and stronger after my daily practice. I also feel able to handle the stress of life.

What surprises people about yoga?

It amazes people how amazing they feel after an hour of practice. It’s surprising how satisfying it is.

What are the health benefits?

Relaxation, cardio (depending on the type of yoga), strength, flexibility, mindfulness.

I know it promotes flexibility, but can it help with weight loss? How? ‘Or’ What?

Yes, especially when the sequences are performed quickly to elevate the heart rate.

What made you decide to become a teacher after four years of practicing yoga?

I wanted to extend my personal journey and my practice by deepening my understanding of yoga. I also wanted to share the gift of daily practice with others.

What would be your advice to someone who wants to become a yoga teacher?

Find a mentor you really like and connect with.

What would one need if they wanted to start yoga? A fancy carpet? Special clothes?

Comfortable clothes you can roam around in and a yoga mat, although most studios allow you to rent one for $ 1 or for free.

How do you feel after a yoga class?

I feel more connected to my body and my breathing. I feel full of energy, but relaxed, and I feel a general calm.
